Enswell’s Grand Opening | Philadelphia’s Newest All-Day Café and Cocktail Bar
There’s a new café in the neighborhood! We’re delighted to announce that Enswell is open! The all-day café joins the Rittenhouse Square community at 1528 Spruce Street—The original ballroom to the Touraine. While Enswell officially opened its doors to the public on August 18th, this concept has been in the works for years. We’re giving you an exclusive look into the café, and menu, and sharing the story behind the coffee shop turned cocktail bar.
About Enswell
Café by day and cocktail bar by night, Enswell pulls inspiration from European cafés and the history of The Touraine building, occupying what was once the historic residential hotel’s ballroom and retaining its milieu.
Enswell’s opening beverage program was designed by Vince Stipo of Superfolie, just named one of Esquire’s “Best Bars in America.” Executive Chef Andrew Farley (formerly High Street on Market and Pub & Kitchen) helms a tight menu of small plates and large-format hors d'oeuvres designed to complement the Enswell drinking experience. The opening marks a full-circle moment for Jonathan Adams, who had a celebrated career as a chef (Pub & Kitchen and The Diving Horse, etc.) before stepping away from the kitchen to co-found Rival Bros with partner Damien Pileggi in 2011.
Café by Day, Cocktail Bar by Night
On weekdays, from 7:00am–3:00pm, and on weekends, from 8:00am-3:00pm, the café serves pastries and will later expand the menu to offer breakfast sandwiches and assorted toasts. The Rival Bros Coffee bar features all the classics, including drip coffee, cold brew, iced lattes, and Chemex pour-overs. Aside from coffee, there is a wide selection of specialty teas, such as English Breakfast and Jasmine Green Tea.
In the evening, from 5:00–10:00pm daily, Enswell will serve various sharing plates featuring options such as a Half Dozen Oysters, Dirty Shrimp Cocktail, specialty cheese, and garlic knots. Entrees include Spaghetti Chitarra and Skate Milanese. In partnership with New Liberty Distilling, the bar’s cocktail menu is uniquely local, only featuring their locally made line of spirits and a selection of Pennsylvania beer and wine. There are also a few zero-proof options available.
Enswell also offers a dedicated bottle shop, and the retail footprint includes Rival Bros products spanning fresh coffee beans to ready-to-drink coffee drinks.
More to come! In the coming months, you’ll find a wonderful lunch menu during the week and a weekend brunch menu. Please keep in mind there are no reservations at this time. View Enswell’s menu and plan your visit here.
Spruce Street Commons Welcomes Enswell
For the design and build-out, Rival Bros has partnered with Spruce Street Commons–the owners of the Touraine, and Stokes Architecture + Design to complete a full-scale renovation of the space. This project has been a labor of love, from the initial design and build-out to the decor and finishing details. We’re fortunate to have collaborated with dozens of local businesses, artisans, and vendors throughout Philadelphia to bring this project to life. We’re sharing all the details regarding the renovation on our blog.
We could not be more excited to welcome Enswell to our community! The café is the perfect place to stop for coffee and baked goods in the morning, or dinner and drinks after work with friends. Our residents and visitors upstairs are especially lucky!
